Spruce

Spruce lumber is the choice for general framing. It is not recommended for decks or other exposed areas. We buy in kiln-dried spruce lumber and almost always, we will have a premium grade in stock. (2x4 and 2x6)

Our designers have tables that provide us with the information about the appropriate size to use in applications like floor joists or ceiling rafters.

We carry a complete range of sizes and the product is stored under a roof once the tarp has been taken off.

Cedar

Western Red Cedar is a unique and prestigious softwood with outstanding physical characteristics. It offers a rare combination of aesthetic appeal and durability without chemicals, thanks to decay-resistant composition. The superior dimensional stability means project components are likely to stay straight, flat and resist warping and cupping; season after season. In addition, cedar is easy to cut,saw and nail with common tools, and readily accepts finishes.

We carry a high grade "architectural knotty" grade of cedar. We also carry the full range of sizes, most lumberyards and certainly big box stores only carry a limited stock.

Cedar is usually used in decks and docks. To maintain the surface, we recommend a stain. It costs more than pressure treated but less than composite lumber.

More information can be found on the Western Red Cedar Association website.

Pressure Treated

Pressure treated lumber in Ontario has been brown in colour since 2013. The dark brown colour fades to a golden brown after a season or so. Pressure treating is designed to protect wood from rot and decay and has served this purpose well over the years.  It is mainly used for docks and decks. Many people use 2x6 for their deck boards but there is another product called 5/4" (called five-quarter select decking boards) that has a big radius edge that is popular. We sell a lot of pressure treated lumber plus the accessories.

What is a stud?

In framing lumber (spruce or SPF), a stud refers to a 2x4 (or 2x6) that is either 8' long; or is "precut" to a length of 92-5/8" (for an 8' wall) or 104-5/8" (for a 9' wall). Do not confuse this with "stud grade" quality which is another issue.
