Spruce

Spruce lumber is the choice for general framing. It is not recommended for decks or other exposed areas. We buy in kiln-dried spruce lumber and almost always, we will have a premium grade in stock. (in 2X4 and 2X6) .

Our designers have tables that provide us with the information about the appropriate size to use in applications like floor joists or ceiling rafters.

Pine

The Eastern White Pine is the tallest softwood tree in Eastern Canada, growing as high as 125 feet tall. It has a straight, uniform grain, dries easily and is prized for its dimensional stability and light colour. It is lightweight and easy to work with both manually and electrically. White pine is used in the manufacture of indoor and outdoor coverings, doors and windows, furniture and mouldings. It is also used for sculpture, toys, decorative articles and kitchen utensils. We have a large stock of pine lumber in our warehouses:

  • 1"x2" and 1"x3" shed stock (clear)
  • 1"x4",6",8",10",12" board D4S #1 Common
  • 6/4" and 8/4"x4",6",8",10",12"

Cedar

Western Red Cedar is a unique and prestigious softwood with outstanding physical characteristics. It offers a rare combination of aesthetic appeal and durability without chemicals, thanks to decay-resistant composition. The superior dimensional stability means project components are likely to stay straight, flat and resist warping and cupping; season after season. In addition, cedar is easy to cut, saw and nail with common tools, and readily accepts finishes.

We carry a high grade “architectural knotty” grade of cedar. We also carry the full range of sizes, most lumberyards and certainly big box stores only carry a limited stock.

Cedar is usually used in decks and docks. To maintain the surface, we recommend a stain. It costs more than pressure treated but less than composite lumber.

More information can be found on the Western Red Cedar Association website.

Pressure Treated

The treating of lumber has been around for a long time now and this process has saved millions of trees because customers do not have to replace their decks. The treatment process has gone under a number of chemical changes over the years and in Ontario, almost all treated wood is brown in colour , rather than the older green colour. The was a North American shortage of this product in 2020. Hopefully supplies will be better in 2021. We sell a lot of pressure treated for docks and decks.

Trex

What is Trex®? Trex is the leading brand of alternative decking, railing, fencing, and trim products designed to maximize your outdoor living experience. Trex Company created the composite decking category and revolutionized the industry. Since then, Trex has inspired many imitators, but they still can’t match the enduring quality and beauty of Trex. In the end, there is only one genuine Trex. Trex composite products are made of a unique combination of wood and plastic fibers. Trex gets its plastic and wood fibers from reclaimed or recycled resources, including sawdust and used pallets from woodworking operations, and recycled plastic grocery bags from all over the country. Our resources are closely screened for high quality standards before they go near a Trex plant. Our manufacturing process keeps thousands of tons of wood and plastic scrap out of landfills every year, while delivering our customers decking, railing and fencing products that are not only beautiful and long-lasting, but also environmentally responsible.
